Food is at the heart of every culture.

My 3-person dev team's brief was to create an app that brought cultures closer together through food. After all, it's the one thing every community has in common! We interviewed home cooks and foodies from around the world to figure out how this could be achieved.

Finding authentic, international food can be tricky.

‍

We discovered that although our generation of food lovers are eager to explore other cultures through food, it's not always easy. Unless you live in a big city, most people don't have access to new cuisines. And when it comes to finding authentic international recipes online, they tend to often be in their local language only.

How can we remove the culinary language barrier?

‍

After speaking to our users, we saw an opportunity to create a multilingual recipe app. Recipeasy allows users to browse and upload authentic recipes from their community and share them with the world. The app then automatically translates each recipe into each user's native language so that they can be enjoyed by everyone.

Creating a seamless translated experience.

After endless task flow iterations, visual language refinement and user testing, it was time to develop the final prototype. As the only product designer on the team, I took charge of creating our entire user interface, ensuring that the translation experience was as seamless as possible for the user.

This project was unique in that I not only designed Recipeasy's interface, but I also took charge of the frontend development. You can watch my first JavaScript prototype here.

Finding out what the foodies think.

We tested Recipeasy with numerous users, all with different native languages, and received an overwhelmingly positive response. Many users suggested added additional features like user ratings and specific food categories, that we later implemented.

A recipe platform that connects the world

The final Recipeasy app is a vibrant, accessible platform that not only allows home chefs to share their own culture identity and unique food creations with the world, but also to preserve traditional recipes forever.
